Another quick plug for Bat Detective, the citizen-science research project which I blogged about┬árecently. In honor of Halloween, if you log onto the site tonight, you’ll get to hear and help scientists classify bat calls from Transylvania and other regions of Romania. According to the Zooniverse team, which collaborates with and promotes a dozen exciting research projects, including Bat Detective, there won’t be any blood-sucking vampire bats in the mix. (Those all live in South America, and this effort focuses on European bats.). But you could get treated to the calls of the threatened Schreiber’s bent-wing bat (Miniopterus schreibersii) or the European free-tailed bat (Tadarida teniotis), “which might possibly be one of the smelliest.” Happy Halloween.
